Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users purchasing such drugs should be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to original mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Experts suggest the way of the injections explains the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have come off the medication describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced something flipping and I was suddenly starving," said a patient.

The struggle is compounded if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural changes.
