RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, located using surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of approach shafts down to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces participating in this operation for their skill and their valour," Healey added. "They were part of numerous British personnel stationed over the holidays. This action, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our security, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an attack killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
